Privacy at a glance

Compare light filtering and view-through. Results vary by fabric, color, and lighting.

Understanding Shade Differences

Consider the table below in understanding what type of fabric will work best for you in the setting that you have. Are you looking for a little privacy but want to retain some of the natural light coming in, maybe more privacy and light reduction, or are you going for complete privacy? The other option is a solar shade to cut out glare and heat but maintain an outward visibility. The chart below will help you in making the right selection.

Openness View-through Privacy / glare
Sheer Softens the view through and filters light. Most objects can be seen with little privacy.
Semi-Sheer Partially obscures view-through and filters light. A balance of daytime privacy and glare control. Hard to identify most objects.
Translucent Allows some natural light to filter through, but offers complete privacy. Excellent fabric if you need privacy but want to retain some of the natural light during the day.
Solar Shades Allows outward daytime view through with a 1, 3, 5, or 10% openness. The higher the percentage, the more outward visibility you will have. Some daytime privacy only.

Selecting the right fabric is essential to creating the right feel for each room.

Critical Step

Measurements

Inches — nearest 1/16 inch

Enter all three width measurements. We’ll highlight the smallest width — you must confirm it before adding to cart.

Width & height

Measuring window width
Inside Mount: Measure the top, middle, and bottom widths. The smallest will be selected. Exterior Mount: Measure opening width and add how far you want the shade fascia to overlap keeping in mind that about 1/2" fabric deduction on each side will be taken.
Measuring window height
Inside mount: Measure entire height inside the opening. Exterior Mount: Measure opening height plus how far above the opening where you want the shade to be mounted.

Inside mount example
Inside mount Shade fits in the opening — clean architectural line when depth allows.
Outside mount example
Outside mount Shade mounts on the trim/wall — better light seal with recommended overlap.

Housing Accessories

Hem Bar Style

The hem bar adds weight to the bottom of your shade so it hangs straight and operates smoothly. The hem bar can be concealed inside a fabric pocket, left exposed for a clean architectural appearance, or fully wrapped in matching shade fabric.
